Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Computer Engineering

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus

CLOSING DATE: December 7, 2026

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia’s Vancouver campus invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of assistant professor (tenure-track) or associate professor (tenure-track or tenured) in the area of computer engineering, with a research focus on computing systems.

We interpret computing systems broadly and welcome applications from candidates working in areas including, but not limited to: computer architecture; digital and integrated systems; embedded and cyber-physical systems; hardware/software co-design; operating and runtime systems; compilers; distributed, cloud, and edge systems; networking; data-intensive systems and storage; and hardware and systems security. We particularly welcome candidates whose work crosses traditional boundaries within computer engineering or connects computing systems with emerging application domains.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will develop an independent, internationally recognized research program that attracts external research support and complements and extends the department's existing strengths; teach undergraduate and graduate courses in computer engineering, including foundational courses in areas such as computer organization, digital systems, embedded computing, software systems, and operating systems, as well as specialized courses aligned with their research; supervise graduate and undergraduate students; and contribute service to the department, university, and the profession.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet the following qualifications:

A doctoral degree in computer engineering, computer science, or a closely related field, completed by the anticipated start date.
Hold, or be eligible to obtain registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Limited Licence with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC) within five years of appointment. Licensure is not required at the time of application. The department has extensive experience supporting new faculty, including those trained outside Canada or holding degrees in computer science, through this process and will provide guidance and support.
A record of research excellence, or clear potential to establish an internationally recognized research program, as demonstrated by publications in leading computing systems venues.
Evidence of strong teaching ability, or demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, at both undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as demonstrated ability or potential to provide effective supervision of graduate students.
Evidence of service to the academic and professional community, or demonstrated potential to engage in academic and professional service.

In assessing applications, UBC recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., parental leave, family responsibilities, leave due to illness) can have on an applicant’s record of research achievement. These impacts will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process.

The University of British Columbia's primary language of instruction and research is English. Accordingly, individuals are required to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING

The University of British Columbia is among the top three universities in Canada and the top 50 worldwide in major international rankings, and placed 29th globally in Engineering and Technology in the 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is one of UBC's largest academic units, with more than 400 graduate students, 1,100 undergraduate students, and research spanning electrical engineering, computer engineering, and related disciplines.

For computing systems researchers, the pairing of a large ECE department with a strong Department of Computer Science creates unusual breadth: active work at every level of the hardware-software stack, and colleagues in architecture, security, networking, machine learning, and data systems on the same campus. Faculty also draw on research institutes across UBC, including the Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems (ICICS), the Advanced Materials and Process Engineering Laboratory (AMPEL), and the Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute (QMI).

The department invests in its new faculty. Incoming assistant professors receive a start-up package and dedicated laboratory space, are paired with senior faculty mentors, and have support in recruiting their first graduate students and preparing early grant applications. UBC's Housing, Immigration and Relocation Services supports incoming faculty with relocation, immigration and work permit assistance, dual-career resources for partners exploring positions at UBC and across Greater Vancouver, and priority placement in university childcare.

The department is located on UBC's Point Grey campus in Vancouver, British Columbia, a vibrant and culturally diverse city situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains and consistently ranked among the world's most livable cities. The University of British Columbia and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering acknowledge the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓-speaking xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people on whose traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory the university resides.
