Job Summary/Basic FunctionThe Chair represents the academic priorities of the Department and performs its executive functions, including budget and resource allocations. The Chair is both the chief academic and chief executive officer of a university unit who reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, who is the chief academic and executive officer of the college. The Chair ensures academic programs are delivered with quality and fairness; undertakes hiring and evaluation of department personnel; and preforms budgeting and resource management subject to approval by the Dean and the University Provost. Data-informed and faculty-informed decisions should be the norm.
Minimum Qualifications - An earned doctorate in computer science, computer engineering or related field.
- Evidence of research in field; tenured at the rank of associate professor or higher in an accredited degree granting academic institution.
- A record of leadership experience within the profession or the university.
- Evidence of successful teaching in higher education.
- Excellent communication and human relation skills.
Preferred Qualifications- Success in administration of programs in higher education to include strategic planning, budgeting, operations, and collaboration with colleagues.
Essential Functions and percent of timeStudent Success - (30%) - Coordinate with student advising and support services to ensure a positive academic experience.
- Implement initiatives to enhance student engagement and experiential learning opportunities.
- Collaborate with the Dean and other administrators to enhance student recruitment, retention, and graduation rates in the department's programs.
- Address student concerns and grievances in a timely and effective manner, advocating for student needs within the college.
- Address student disciplinary matters.
- Coordinate student reviews of degree progress.
- Coordinate student transfer credit in conjunction with the Department's academic programming director and the Division of Student Success.
Department Leadership - (25%) - Work with faculty, students, and staff to establish and maintain a long-term vision for the department that is consistent with the college and university missions and strategic plans.
- Provide leadership to achieve the highest possible level of excellence in the teaching, research, and service activities of the unit.
- Develop and articulate department goals to achieve the developed vision.
- Serve as a liaison between the department and other units of the institution.
- Ensure departmental compliance with all university policies and the rules and regulations of the collective bargaining agreement.
- Create an inclusive and productive department culture.
- Review and assess academic programs offered by the department.
- Coordinate accreditation activities to ensure compliance with ABET and HLC guidelines
- Review, assess, and proactively address retention issues arising from DFW reporting.
- Assess general education outcomes in core courses taught within the department.
- Initiate new academic programs and projects when appropriate.
Department Operations - (25%) - Coordinate execution of the unit's educational programs, and the scheduling of courses and assignment of instructors in consultation with program directors, the faculty, and the Dean's office.
- Support faculty in their research, teaching, and professional development efforts.
- Oversee the department's fiscal operations; develop and regularly monitor the department budget.
- Oversee curriculum development and revisions for the department.
- Review and revise department information published in the university catalog.
- Manage the maintenance of departmental print and electronic records, including websites.
- Oversee the safety, accessibility, and maintenance of facilities, including labs and equipment.
- Monitor course registrations and make appropriate adjustments in course schedules and instructor assignments in cooperation with other departments/areas/programs and the dean's office.
Essential Functions and percent of time (cont'd)Personnel - (20%) - Recruit, appoint, and supervise faculty and staff.
- Evaluate faculty performance in the context of workload agreement and quality.
- Provide mentoring and mentoring structures for the unit faculty.
- Evaluate staff performance.
- Coordinate the appointment and supervision of non-teaching staff and student assistants.
- Review faculty and staff grievances within the department.
- Create an inclusive and productive department culture.
