Position Summary:
The Department of Forest, Rangeland and Fire Sciences (FRFS) seeks a non-tenure track Assistant Research Professor with expertise in computational data analysis to help expand our interdisciplinary research and teaching efforts focused on the development of quantitative remote sensing techniques for environmental monitoring, both from passive (optical) and active (LiDAR) sensors, and on the development of quality assessment and validation standards for remotely sensed thematic products. This is a soft-funded position; the successful candidate is required to fully fund their own salary and fringe benefits.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completed Ph.D. in Mathematics (or related field such as Engineering or Physics with a strong mathematical focus)
- Experience with natural resource and environmental science issues
- Experience of the principles of statistics, sampling theory and probability theory
- Experience with complied and interpreted programming languages (at minimum C and Python in Linux environment)
- Experience publishing research in high-impact, refereed journals
- Experience competing for external funding
- Familiarity with the CEOS guidelines for the validation and calibration of thematic map products
- Experience with the state of the art in machine learning
- Experience in geometric data analysis with a focus on 3-D structures
- Written and oral communication skills
- Candidate must be self-funded; at least 7 months of salary support must be in-hand at time of application
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary research team
- Experience with supercomputing environments
- Strong understanding of artificial intelligence and deep learning frameworks
- Experience in teaching undergraduate courses
- Experience mentoring graduate students at the PhD level
