Essential Functions
Job Summary
As a Research Engineer in our materials characterization team, this position will be responsible for supporting and executing research projects aimed at understanding the structure-property relationships of advanced materials.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide technical support for all users. Design/execute experiments to characterize the microstructure and composition of materials using a variety of advanced techniques including electron microscopy (TEM, SEM, STEM), focused ion beam (FIB) sample preparation, spectroscopy (EDS), and other analytical techniques.
- Conduct data analysis, image processing, and quantification of materials properties using various software tools, including Python coding.
- Work collaboratively with internal and external researchers to design and execute experiments.
- Develop and maintain expertise in the latest techniques and technologies for materials characterization and contribute to the development of new analytical methods and protocols.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and operate equipment including overseeing the installation of new equipment and ensuring proper safety protocols are followed during experiments.
- Prepare and present technical reports for customers.
- Train new users.
- Support core facility communication including website and social media.
- Support outreach activities.
- Conduct tours and demonstrations.
- Support the development of instructional workshops for the university and the public.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree from an accredited institution in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or related field.
- 4+ years of experience in electron microscopy (TEM, SEM, STEM), focused ion beam (FIB) microscopy, and electron spectroscopy (EDS).
- Education may be substituted for experience on a one for one basis.
- Experience with sample preparation for TEM and SEM imaging.
- Oversee maintenance for equipment service and troubleshoot/repair equipment not under service contract.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, with the ability to communicate and work effectively with colleagues from various backgrounds.
- Ability to communicate and present technical information clearly and concisely to a wide range of audiences.
- Ability to train new users and technically support researchers.
- Ability to think creatively and independently to develop solutions to complex research problems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or related field with a focus on materials characterization or equivalent experience in a research or industrial setting.
- Experience with X-ray Diffraction, Atomic Force Microscopy Raman Microscopy.
- Experience with iLabs, interlocks, or similar software for billing, and tracking user access.
- Ability to occasionally work after hours or on weekends.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic understanding of clerical procedures and systems such as recordkeeping and filing.
- Demonstrated independent decision-making and problem-solving ability.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite programs.
