Position Summary:
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Idaho seeks candidates for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in structural engineering at the level of assistant or associate professor. Rank and tenure are negotiable based on how the candidates meets the criteria outlined in the college and department bylaws.
We are seeking candidates with interest in the structural engineering topics of significant societal importance such as sustainable structural materials especially timber and wood-composites, resilient infrastructure systems, innovative structural analysis, performance-based design, and in emerging research areas.
The CEE Department is in midst of a $7M fundraising campaign to renovate laboratory spaces and increase student support. CEE has secured donations to begin transforming the existing structures laboratory into the Tamarack Grove Engineering Structures Laboratory. This laboratory space is approximately 1600 sq ft. We are particularly interested in candidates with a vision to grow this laboratory into an outstanding modern teaching and research facility. The new hire will be expected to have a central role in the development of this facility.
The successful candidate will teach both traditional civil engineering structural engineering courses, as well as develop new courses in their specific area of expertise. The CEE department is committed to quality education and has high expectations for teaching excellence. The candidate will advise/mentor both undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong externally funded research program that supports graduate students and results in high-quality publications. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (
CEE) was the first department at UI. The department faculty are strongly committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education and the professional demand for our graduates is outstanding.
CEE faculty are the drivers of two well-known research centers, the Center for Ecohydraulics Research (
CER) and the National Institute for Advanced Transportation Technology (
NIATT). The department is in the midst of a highly successful fundraising campaign to renovate educational infrastructure and increase student support with three new/renovated labs underway: the Tamarack Grove Engineering Structures Laboratory, an Advanced Computing Laboratory, and the Ardurra Water Laboratory.

Minimum Education/Degree Required:
Listed degree qualification is required at time of hire.
Required Qualifications:
- B.S. and Ph.D in Civil Engineering
- Ability to obtain licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Idaho within 3 years of hire
- Experience in structural engineering
- Research experience
- Experience communicating to multiple stakeholder groups, both orally and in writing
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in structural engineering
- Professional experience in private practice or government agency
- Experience conducting externally funded research
- Experience managing, teaching, and conducting research in a laboratory setting
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary environments
