POSITION OVERVIEW
3RD ASSISTANT ENGINEER aboard Maine Maritime Academy ‘s Training Ship State of Maine (TSSOM).
Position reports to the Chief Engineer or their designee, acts as Engineer Officer of the Watch or Engineering Maintenance officer during underway periods. Reports to First Assistant Engineer during non-underway periods to assist with planned maintenance and repair of ships systems. The Third Assistant Engineer –Officer provides training to cadets during the sea term and during shipboard maintenance activities. Applicant must possess all USCG Certificates and Licenses, and all STCW endorsements required of a 3rd Assistant Engineer/OICEW.
• Is assigned to the vessel and as such participates in all deployments and sea terms
• Work closely with the Ship’s 2nd Assistant Engineer and 1st Assistant Engineer with regards to parts
and supplies needed for maintenance and repair.
• Participate in maintenance and repair activities as needed.
• Will supervise and train students of varying experience levels.
• Familiarity with integrated maintenance and logistics (NSE) system.
• Frequently act as a safety observer during any evolution involving groups of students; working
knowledge of/experience with Safety Management Systems is recommended.
• Perform all duties normally associated with a 3rd Engineer’s position.
• Responsible for objectively evaluating student performance as well as work and training processes.
• As a uniformed officer will comply with the regimental uniform regulations as modified by the Master
of the Training Ship.
• Stand watches as a licensed engineering officer, in port or underway, as assigned by the Chief Engineer.
• Other duties as assigned.
